About Cheryl Black

As Marketing Campaign Manager, my job is to share best practices, new ideas, and research with fundraisers. I LOVE fundraising and nonprofits – my passion was sparked in college when I took a nonprofit communications course in pursuit of my bachelor degrees in American History and Mass Communication. I’ve been involved in the sector ever since; professionally, with the Girl Scouts of Central Texas and personally, as a volunteer with the Girl Scouts, Young Nonprofit Professional Network of Austin, and even the Cancer Council in Australia. I’m particularly geeky about Girl Power, influenced by my philanthropic experiences as a TriDelta and my time at Girl Scouts. On the home front, I have a firefighter hubby, young son, and very spoiled puppy.

At the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) International Fundraising Conference this past weekend, speaker Marcia Cone led “Waves of Change,” a session on change management.  Her point about timing is the one that stuck with me the most.  She says it takes 60 to 90 days to really implement change, and three to six months …

Both nonprofit finance and fundraising professionals cite differing priorities, variances in reporting metrics, and lack of communication/information sharing as the biggest challenges they face when working together, according to findings from our latest research, “Nonprofit Finance and Fundraising Collaboration Study.”

Nonprofit finance professionals also call out differing personalities and ad hoc reporting requests/interruptions as top challenges …

What’s Your Organization’s Girl Scout Cookie?

This month our team made five predictions about the fundraising world for 2016. Naturally, they are all good (we wouldn’t give you shoddy predictions, now would we?) but, coming from a long and loyal background in Girl Scouts, my favorite is alternative revenue sources.

In a nutshell, this means finding ways outside of grants and traditional …

A Major Gift Officer’s Data Dream Come True!

It’s relatively easy – and really tempting – to simply segment your donors by the size of their most recent gift. In just about any donor database, you can run a quick report, and BAM, have those segments ready to go.

But with donor attrition at a frightful 57 percent, according to the Fundraising Effectiveness Project, …

Why Peer-to-Peer Fundraising?

Only 10 percent of nonprofit pros use peer-to-peer (P2P) fundraising at their organizations. That finding is from the 2015 Fundraising Advisor Benchmark Report.

You’re thinking: Great, Cheryl. But, so what? Why are you telling me this? I’m kinda busy with end-of-year fundraising and really, I just want to pour a glass of eggnog and put on …

Breast Cancer NonProfit Understands the Power of “Thank You!”

Four years ago, my grandmother was declared breast cancer free! To honor her victory, I became involved with the Breast Cancer Resource Centers of Texas (BCRC).

BCRC’s mission is to ensure nobody fights breast cancer alone, and after my grandma’s experience, I knew the value of the kind of support BCRC provides. So, as we “go …

Increase Retention with Member Report Cards

Summer vacation is coming to an end, which means it’s less about baseball cards and more about report cards for the next nine-plus months!

But it’s not just the kids who should be receiving their grades this time of year.

Sending report cards to your members is a great way to remind them of the value your …
